Pegasus Presentation - Feedback

Yan - Your presentation was excellent! I would offer a few questions and comments. On slide 8, you highlight several models, Patrick Lencioni, Jim Collins, and Otto Scharmer. It was not clear to me what you were trying to point out. Are you saying that these other approaches are inadequate? It appears that you have tools to determine if “Abbott” has the “deep structures of the social field”, is that so? And finally, I felt that slide 13 was excellent in depicting the Theory U journey to the “right-side” of the U. What escapes me at this point is the “how” to use the exercises. One option might be to include an audio portion to the presentation. Or better yet, some simple examples. Additionally, I would like think about your materials as a “template” for doing this work with a less “sophisticated” group, however found it a bit esoteric for ordinary consumption. Any thoughts.

Thanks for your thoughtful comments.

You are absolutely right that this is definitely not suitable for general consumption or even reading by people "in the know". It relies heavily on the presenter - me - to make it come alive. Recall that Skip Griffith had one slide for his 90 minutes talk at the last Pegasus Conference. So in his case, the contents were almost entirely in the delivery! Mine is a lot more tangible in comparison :)

To answer your specific questions:
(1) I use Lencioni and Collins' models to convey the idea that we have long relied on different models of the social reality to manage organizational change. Theory U is not the first nor would be the last. The advantage of TU over previous models is that it offers a more granular and impersonal "slice" of social reality. Thus, unlike Collins, we don't need to wait for a level 5 leader to show up. Each of us already have level 5 leadership qualities in ourselves, we just need to cultivate it more, let it show up more and become more consistent. It is tremendously empowering! Similarly, Lencioni's model reveals an important but partial truth about relationship between trust, conflict, commitment, accountability and results. It hardly explains where does trust come from in the first place. TU does a better job in revealing the source of sustainable trust: generative leadership or the deepest source of your Self and Will (see slide # 18). So in a way, TU encompasses both Lencioni and Collins. In my presentation, this is intended as a transition slide to a more detailed introduction of TU on slide # 9. The reason I use a transition slide is for people who are more familiar with Lencioni and Collins than TU. Does it make sense to you?
(2) The "deep structures of the social field" exist everywhere - in ourselves, the organizations we belong to, the society we live in, the universe ... The only question is if we are able to "see", "sense" and "presense" it in TU language. If we are blind to them, as is the case most of the time in human history, we are bond to create chaos and crises for ourselves. So the value of TU is first and foremost shed lights on the existence of these deeper fields. Only after we have developed the capacity and skills to decipher them, would we be able to deal with such realities adequately to avoid crises and advance human experience to the next level - remember Einstein's quote on slide # 4?
(3) Exercises definietly guidance. Thanks for your suggestion to provide examples. I'll work on them and let you know.

Hi Jerry,

I take my view of technology from a philosopher of technology called Fredrick Ferre in USA. He said something like technology is the application of applied practical intelligence in a book titled "Philosophy of Technology".

I build on that view and see an emergent property arising out of that which means we do not always control technology as we strive to maximise personal value. Key thing is 'technology' is not the instrument as most think. It is a series of interactions, such as what you do when the traffic light at a cross roads turns red; you and the traffic lights interact to create a road safety technology.

The danger we face as a species is we do not manage 'technology' as is evidenced by global warming and the difficulty we have in adapting the way we go about things and resultant systemic interactions. We're blind to the paradigm we're all in because we don’t acknowledge social technology is a part of other types of technology which ultimately have a symbiotic relationship with Nature.
