Lead with Power and Love - A Transformative Leadership Development Program

Gerry and I just launched the program. Your feedback and referal are very much appreciated.

Why

"Power without love is reckless and abusive and love without power is sentimental and animic ... It is precisely this collision of immoral power with powerless morality which constitues the major crisis of our time" - Martin Luther King Jr.

Is this latest offering coming from your heart or your head, truly?

That is my first question and thought.

The underlying sense that i get from all this theory as proffered materials is fragmentation - emphasis on 'mentation'...

Second question is: Have you ever worked with Adam Kahane?

This question arrives because you seem to me to be connecting him, King and your own offerings as 'connected'.

King is (of course;-) not someone 'one would wish to' contradict, which is why so many people, on all sides ;-) seem to quote him. Like they do other 'authentic' figures hailed rightly as leaders.

Third Question then is: Did any of you ever meet and know King?

King was a great user of 'words' - the medium you/we are swimming in.

In my experience, Adam Kahane is a trivial abuser of great persons' words.

I don't i regret know the context of King's words well enough right now (do you?) in order to understand why he has dichotomised love and power in this way. I will undertake to find out.

I have known Adam Kahane, and his work first through his articles and book, then partially through correspondence and then F2F as a 'partner' in forming REOS (the 2008 rebrand) since 2004. I also have known 'ditto' those people who brought him on in his early career. They are my personal friends. I am just lucky i guess.

I have challenged him one to one on some issues that i feel are close to those that i 'feel' are 'there' with your group and this effort. He has admitted on occasions that he was 'wrong' to express what i had challenged him about using words that misrepresented actuality. He was in fact quite contrite. I was superficially impressed. UNTIL. I found that he continued to say and write one way and act and walk another. This is what Bateson would have called - THE DIFFERENCE.

I came later a few years ago to experience the high toxicity IN THE ROOM of what you imply (to me) by importing those wonderful rhetorical words by King Jr.

There is no doubt Adam Kahane and others in this whole U thing knows how to write a good story. But it is only HIS story (history).

I often reflect that perhaps if people knew more about the publishing game, people in this U and presence realm, like unhappy dieters, would realise that it might be more enlightening, in this age of POWER ( the word derives it seems from an much older word meaning poverty) to eat the book!

I would LOVE it if one day i could get Kahane to EAT his WORDS, but most of them are borrowed, begged or stolen.

For me, personaly -:) people like King Jr, and all those around him who would have put themselves between the bullet and his heart, LIVE out of their words authentically because they embody personal visceral courage. Kahane by his own personal admission is 'a coward' in the 'field' and it is in fields, like the killing fields of Syria, right now, that you will find the living spirit you seem ever to chase and never meet, Face to face, " in the fierce urgency of NOW! (King)

Hi Andrew

Thanks for your deep meditation on our effort – it took me all the way back to the old days of great explorations in an armchair that was and still is pervasive in the intellectual and spiritual communities of our societies (e.g., universities and churches). One thing I do agree with you is that love and power could only be found on the real battle fields of life, in Syria as well as the suites of Corporate America. However, I categorically reject your overall suspicion and cynicism towards the works by other people, imperfect as we all are, and also what came across as an utter lack of humility or even narcissism that you alone understood the true meaning of Dr. King’s words (I suspect there is a strong correlation between these two aspects of your outlook on life)

The fundamental premise of our program is that everyone experiences love and exercises power in reality: what we do, feel, think and strive for everyday. To appreciate and improve such experiences though, one needs a setting that could bring together the full complexity and richness of life together. We are simply creating such a space of learning and sharing for real practitioners in business to refine our experience of the lives we are living at this moment. We are not pretending to solve all of life’s challenges but only focus on the specific setting of Western corporations where both of us have worked for decades and feel that the separation of power and love are particularly acute and ripe for reconciliation and renewal.

Best Regards,

Yan

There is no such remark by me above about Dr King, in fact if you dwell with it, i am asking you about your knowledge of his work and life, and of course i have my own feelings.

I am not suspicious of King's motives or authenticity at all, though i do not think he was a saint. Nor did he ;-)

I have no idea about YOUR use of terms like cynicism, projected into me, but i do know that U people love to throw it at people, usually in the context in which you have just done so, I am, however, deeply cynical about Adam Kahane.

What comes across for you is perhaps a reflection of your own ignorance in this 'specific' matter. A part of your own imperfection.

i have little experience of great days in armchairs, so i cannot comment.

Please share with me then any accounts, with pictures and reports and comments by third parties, client systems in the universe of which you are a part, of your heroic efforts in the corporate or any other world.

what i see in a lot of your 'work' is a kind of opportunism with other peoples effort in the 'mess', and precious little original contributions. But seeing needs presencing. So put the materials in  my hands for me to play with...

I could say with complete accuracy that the cynicism you are projecting into me here and now is better aimed at people who by working with him in the field found him a complet egoist. I am happy off this forum to copy you the text verbatim.

I think i sensed in you a lot of pointless hero worshipping and bandwaggoning, first with otto and then after his new book came out, with Kahane.

I sense from your videos and postures that you are deeply frustrated, not very creative and downloading all the time.

I invite you to really put your own cynicism aside and read what i actually wrote.

Dear Andrew

I freely admit that I am not perfect, make mistakes, borrow other people's ideas all the time and, yes, quite opportunistic about how I could experience love and exercise power in this world. The problem I have is with your claim that you are not :) How does humanity ever learn and develop without all these characteristics?

As to presenting you with evidence, why should I bother? You are a guest to this learning community, please show respect for yourself and other people and clean up your attitude and language or feel free to share your 'wisdom' elsewhere ...

Regards,

Yan
